How to Prepare a Car for Storage

How to Prepare a Car for Storage | Fort Meade, FL

If you need to put your car away for a while, take care to put it to bed properly. Following these few tips can keep the vehicle in good shape for future use.

Inside Storage

If you have access to a garage, it’s the best long-term place to store a vehicle. However, if you don’t have a garage, consider renting a storage unit. As a last resort, get a car cover to keep the exterior in good shape.

Maintenance Items

If you are going to be leaving the vehicle for a year or more, make sure it’s in good condition first. Give it a good wash and wax to protect the finish. Have the oil changed and fill the gas tank to prevent toxins and oxidation from damaging internal parts.

Take it for a Spin

If a car is not driven regularly, the battery will lose charge. Regular short runs keep the engine in good order and prevent the tires from developing flat spots. If this is not possible, take the tires off. Also, avoid using the parking brake when a car is in storage because the pads could fuse to the rotors.

Put up a No Vacancy Sign

Mice, squirrels and other small creatures love to make nests in vehicles that don’t move very often. Plug up the exhaust pipe and air intake with steel wool to discourage entry, and arrange mothballs or cotton balls or swabs that have been soaked in peppermint oil around the perimeter of the car to keep intruders out.

Chevrolet One of the Longest-Lasting Car Brands, Says Study

Long Lasting Chevrolet Brand in Fort Meade, FL

In 2019, iSeeCars.com analyzed over 15.8 million cars in 2019 to find out the longest-lasting car brands. Their sole aim was to figure out which makes and models had made it past the 200,000-mile mark on the odometer. The study then ranked vehicles and brands by the percentage of vehicles still on the road after 200,000 miles.

iSeeCars CEO Phong Ly cited “truck-like SUVs and pickup trucks” as the vehicles most likely to last. This category includes the Chevrolet Silverado 1500, the Chevrolet Tahoe and the Suburban.

Chevrolet Tahoe and Suburban

Both of these full-size SUVs ranked high on the chart of overall highest-ranking vehicles. The Chevrolet Suburban came in with a rating of 4.9 percent, while the Tahoe was 4.1 percent. The industry average for vehicles overall was only 1 percent, and the industry average for all SUVs was even smaller at 0.9 percent.

Chevrolet Silverado 1500

In the Longest-Lasting Pickup Truck category in the iSeeCars study, 2.0 percent of the vehicles still on the road after passing the 200,000-mile mark are Chevy Silverado 1500 models. This puts them above the segment average of 1.8 percent.

When it came to the longest-lasting brands, Chevrolet came in at 4th place overall, with 1.4 percent of vehicles on the road over 200,000 miles hailing from the bowtie brand.

Silverado HD and Sierra HD Win Technology Innovation Award at CES

Chevrolet Silverado HD in Fort Meade, FL

The 2020 Chevrolet Silverado HD and GMC Sierra HD have been singled out by ALG to receive a Technology Innovation Award. ALG is an organization that forecasts the residual value of cars in the U.S. and Canada. They awarded the prize to General Motors for the innovative trailering camera systems on the Silverado and Sierra. This is the second year that ALG has awarded the technology prize at the 2020 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.

Trailer views, inside and out

The judges heaped praise on the trailering systems of the Sierra and Silverado, which employ numerous cameras to provide multiple views around the vehicles from the bed, around the outside of the vehicle, and even through the trailer.  A transparent trailer view in the vehicles uses cameras to create a view representing what’s immediately behind the trailer, taking the stress out of backing a trailer and eliminating the need for a second person to help you maneuver. You’ll be able to enjoy a clear view of what’s behind the trailer on an 8-inch infotainment touch screen on the truck’s dashboard. This handy technology is more than user friendly — it’ll give you a sense of security greater than ever before.

Back-to-School Safety Tips to Keep in Mind this Fall

It’s back-to-school season, which means the streets are likely to have more traffic congestion and more foot traffic. Whether you’re dropping off your children at school or simply driving past a school building, here are some important back-to-school safety tips to keep in mind.

There are several things you can do to improve the safety of your family and others when dropping off your children at school. First, avoid double parking, since it can lower the visibility for other drivers and students. When picking up or dropping off, always do so in the designated location. Dropping your child off across the street may save you time waiting in line, but it can be dangerous for your child to cross the street.

Even if you don’t have kids, you’ll still need to share the road with school-age children. It’s important to avoid blocking the crosswalk while stopping at a red light since students might walk into traffic trying to get around your vehicle. Additionally, slow down in school zones in case students are walking.

We at Greenwood Chevrolet hope your family has a fantastic school year. Stop by our service department for a vehicle inspection and any necessary maintenance before making the commute to school.
